Carpet manufacturers have strong recommendations when it comes to the care and maintenance of carpets. Most believe that a good carpet cleaning routine begins with vacuuming. Some manufacturers believe that vacuuming at least once a week is sufficient, while others believe that it is actually necessary to vacuum carpets on a daily basis. Additionally, most carpet companies also recommend professional carpet cleanings at least once a year, especially for high traffic and heavily soiled areas. In fact, some manufacturers require their customers to perform professional carpet cleanings on a regular basis in order to maintain their carpet warranty.
How should you maintain your carpet between the recommended yearly carpet cleaning sessions? SCENTRAL has come up with a list of tips to help you with that task:
Vacuum – Invest in a high quality vacuum and clean at least once a week or more, especially in high traffic areas. Frequent and thorough carpet cleaning will prolong the life of your carpet by reducing soil and dirt buildup.
Once a month clean around baseboards, radiators and other hard to reach areas using the crevice tool of your vacuum.
Divide wall-to-wall carpeting into smaller areas and slowly go over each section several times to allow removal of all dust and dirt. This should be done in a thorough manner, especially for plush carpeting.
Clean stains as soon as they happen. The longer a stain stays on a carpet, the harder it will be to remove.
Use appropriate stain removers and carpet cleaning agents, starting with the mildest one available, and always follow instructions. Harsh carpet cleaning and stain removal agents should only be used when absolutely necessary. Mild or harsh, avoid overusing any carpet cleaning or stain removal solutions as they can leave behind a residual that even detailed vacuuming will not remove.
Always test a carpet cleaning agent on a small, hidden part of your carpet to ensure it is safe for use. Carpets are made of different materials and may be sensitive to different cleaning agents. If after applying a carpet cleaning agent you notice that the colour on your test section is fading, do not use that specific carpet cleaning solution.
Do not dig, rub or brush a stain as this can cause it to spread even further and can also weaken the fibers of your carpet. Instead, scrape a stain towards the middle and then blot with white paper towel or cloth.
Do not overwet carpet as this may cause a whole slew of problems including carpet shrinkage, adhesions, brownouts, mould and mildew.
Do not use hair dryers or irons to dry a carpet stain. This will only seal in the stain permanently.
Add baking soda to your vacuum bag to combat odours.
